Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a means of adjusting the body’s energy (Qi) through the insertion of fine needles into carefully selected acupuncture points. These points lie on energy channels (meridians) and are directly related to specific organs and physiological functions. The needles stimulate the flow of energy and remove blockages so that the Qi can be dispersed and regulated. When the Qi is flowing properly throughout the body, the balance is restored and results include deep relaxation, pain relief, and healing.

Acupuncture is commonly used for pain relief (lower back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, tennis elbow), menstrual cramps, respiratory complaints, headaches (including tension headaches and migraines) and overall wellness including stress management.

What to expect

In the room you will hear soothing peaceful music, relaxing aromas in the air, a safe and comfortable space. We will then have a consultation to discuss your symptoms and treatment.

Acupuncture points are situated in all areas of the body. Sometimes the appropriate points are far removed from the area of your pain. I will tell you the general site of the planned treatment and whether you need to remove any clothing. A gown, towel or sheet will be provided.

You lie on massage table for the treatment, which involves insertion of acupuncture needles to various depths at strategic points on your body. The needles are very thin, so insertion usually causes little discomfort. People often don't feel them inserted at all. A typical treatment uses 5 to 20 needles.

Benefits

"I have been suffering from painful periods since the birth of my baby 2 years ago. On a friend’s recommendation I went to see Orla and after a few sessions, my periods became more regular and I no longer had painful periods. I highly recommend this treatment for painful periods."

Maeve

"I have had PMS (cramps, migraines and shoulder pain) for almost 2 decades now (the pain was sometimes debilitating) but after 3 sessions with Orla my period has regulated and I have no more premenstrual symptoms. Thank you!!"

Laura

"I suffered from haemorrhoids since the birth of my son 6 years ago – I have been to so many consultants and specialists and had laser treatment but nothing was alleviating the pain and bleeding. I went to Orla for 3 sessions and have seen a huge improvement. I am now back teaching yoga again. She has also helped with my perimenopausal symptoms (night sweats and hot flashes). Highly recommend acupuncture sessions with her."

Frequently Asked Questions about Acupunture

What can acupuncture help with?

Acupuncture may help with pain relief, including lower back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis and tennis elbow. It is also commonly used for menstrual cramps, headaches, migraines, respiratory complaints and stress management.

Is acupuncture good for headaches and migraines?

Yes. Acupuncture can be effective for both tension headaches and migraines by addressing the underlying imbalance contributing to the symptoms.

Can acupuncture help with painful or irregular periods?

Yes. Acupuncture may help regulate blood flow through the abdominal area, relax the nervous system and reduce muscular contractions linked to painful or irregular periods.

What happens during an acupuncture session?

Your session begins with a consultation about your symptoms and treatment goals. You then lie on a treatment table while fine needles are placed in selected acupuncture points, sometimes away from the area of pain. The room is set up to feel calm, safe and relaxing.

Is acupuncture painful?

Most people feel very little discomfort. The needles are extremely fine, and many clients do not feel them being inserted at all.
